The Three Drives Check

We all carry three primal drives shaped early in life: the need for connection and approval, the desire for recognition or reward, and the instinct for safety and security. These drives often run in the background, influencing our reactions, relationships, and choices without us noticing.

This short check-in helps you pause, name what’s active in the moment, and respond with greater clarity and freedom instead of automatic patterns.

Step 1: Pause and Notice

Take a slow breath. Bring to mind a recent moment when you felt:

  • Tension, anxiety, or irritation
  • The urge to perform, please, or withdraw
  • A sense that something was “off”

Step 2: Ask the Three Questions

Which drive feels most active right now?

  • Friends / Approval → Am I seeking connection, acceptance, or fear of rejection?
  • Rewards / Recognition → Am I chasing validation, success, or a sense of worth?
  • Safety / Security → Am I trying to regain control, avoid discomfort, or protect myself?

Note the strongest one (you can have more than one).

Step 3: Accept the Raw Feeling

Name the emotion underneath without judgment:

“There’s fear here… sadness… frustration… vulnerability…”

Say to yourself: “This feeling is real and human. I don’t have to fix it or run from it right now.”

Step 4: Check the Quick Reasoning

What silent “if-then” is running?

Examples:

  • “If I don’t get approval, then I’m not enough.”
  • “If things aren’t going perfectly, then everything is falling apart.”
  • “If I feel this discomfort, then I can’t stand it.”

Step 5: Choose One Small Aligned Action

Pick one guiding response:

  • Respect – Rate the behavior, not the person (including yourself).
  • Courage – Stay with the feeling for one more breath.
  • Temperance – Moderate the demand (“I want this, but I don’t must have it”).
  • Metaphysical Security – Accept that life includes uncertainty and imperfection.

Then take one tiny, doable action that honors both the drive and your deeper self (an honest breath, a kind inner statement, or a small step that doesn’t depend on external validation).

Reflection Space

What did I notice?

How did it feel to name the drive instead of acting on it automatically?

One small action I will try next time this drive appears:

Closing Note

You don’t need to eliminate these drives. You only need to become more conscious of them. The more often you pause and check in, the more freedom and clarity you create.
